Located in the heart of downtown Hartford, Connecticut’s Old State House is where the state’s democratic story began. This National Historic Landmark (est. 1960) served as the state capitol from 1796–1878 and later Hartford City Hall until 1915. Today, it’s a dynamic museum and civic space managed by The Connecticut Democracy Center in partnership with the Connecticut General Assembly.
Explore beautifully restored historic rooms, hands-on exhibits, and events that bring Connecticut’s history and civics to life. From the Kid Governor® and Connecticut History Day to the iconic Farmers Market and Conversations at Noon, there’s something for everyone year-round.
Walk in the footsteps of history—where the 1814 Hartford Convention took place, where debates shaped the 1818 Constitution, and where landmark trials like Prudence Crandall’s and the Amistad were heard.
